Schulze Elementary, representing the Detroit Schools, has won several awards, in this year’s Academic Games Leagues of America Competition. The elementary school had several teams competing in the Academic Games Leagues of America Competition. Both team and individual awards were given for performance. The teams have won state awards at the Michigan League of Academic Games competition held in Grand Rapids and the Academic Games Leagues of America Competition held in Eatonton, Georgia. Three teams received awards in the state level, Team Unbelievable, Team Unpredictable, and Team Small Wonders. Team Unpredictable members were Kiara Chatman, Tierra Holland, Toria Holland, Ahmed Patterson, and Chaves Wesley. Team Unbelievable members were D’Lante Boyce, Dantez Boykin, Anesha Hamlin, Royal Maxwell, and Bhe’Anna Thomas. Team Small Wonders’ team captain was Kambria Chatman.

Team Unpredictable is the State Champions in the Wff n’ Proof Game, First Place in the Elementary Division in the On-Words Game, Third Place in the Elementary Division in the On-Sets Game and Honorable Mention in Propaganda. Team Unbelievable won Second Place in Elementary Division for the On-Words Game and Team Small Wonders won First Place in Elementary Division for the Minor Equations Game. Team Unpredictable went on to compete and win several awards at the Academic Games Leagues of America Competition. They won team awards in the following: Second Place in On-Sets Game and Wff n’ Proof Game, Third Place in Propaganda and Overall Math, and Second Place in Best Overall Team in the Elementary Division. Team Unpredictable’ team members also received some individual awards. In the Wff n’ Proof Game the First Place Individual winner was Tierra Holland and the Second Place Individual winner was Chaves Wesley. Other Uses of Yom

Day is not the only translation for the word Yom. Here are some other uses.

Time

It is interesting to note that in 67 verses in the Old Testament, the word Yom is translated into the English word "time." For instance, in Genesis 4:3, it says "And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord." In this instance, Yom refers to a growing season, probably several months. In Deuteronomy 10:10, it refers to forty days. In I Kings 11:42, it refers to 40 years.

In Isaiah 30:8, it says "Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever." In this case, Yom is equal to "forever."

Year

Four times in the Old Testament Yom is translated "year." In I Kings 1:1, "David was old and stricken in years..." In 2 Chronicles 21:19, "after the end of two years" and in the very next verse "Thirty and two years old." Finally, in Amos 4:4, "...and your tithes after three years." In each case, Yom represents years, not days.

Deuteronomy 19:9 "...to love the Lord thy God, and to walk ever in His ways..." Here, Yom represents a lifetime. As long as we live we are to walk in his ways

As you can see, Moses used the word Yom to represent 12-hours, 24 hours, the creative week, forty days, several months, a lifetime, and eternity.

Common Young Earth Arguments

To get around the obvious conclusion that Yom in Genesis 1 can mean millions of years, young earth theorists have come up with several arguments, none of which is supported by common Hebrew grammatical rules according to Hebrew experts. These rules were created by Hebrew language experts who are young earth creationists, thus their viewpoint is obviously biased. They have a specific agenda they are trying to prove, and thus cannot be objective.

Ordinals/Cardinals

Whenever Yom is used with an ordinal or cardinal number (1st, 2nd, 1,2, etc) that it always represents a 24 hour day. However, this is not true. In Zechariah 14:7-9, the "one day" refers to a period of time when the Lord shall be king over the earth. In other places, some say that Isaiah and Hosea have numbers with the word day which are figurative (External Link). 1 Hebrew scholars do not recognize this fabricated rule.2

What is important in the Hebrew language is the intentions of the author. We should not create rules that support our own agendas, but should strive to understand the author's intended meaning outside of rules.

Evening/Morning Construction

In Genesis 1 Moses says "and there was evening and morning the xx day". Does the use of evening and morning indicate a sunrise and sunset for each creative day? First, let's look at what evening and morning are not. They are not actual evening and mornings, as this requires a sunrise and sunset. According to young earth theory, the Sun was not created until Day Four, thus there could be no sunrise or sunset for the first three days of creation. However, God uses the terms evening and morning for those first three days. Therefore, they cannot be actual evenings and mornings.

We are left with only one option. The words for Evening and Morning can only represent the beginning and ending of the creative period, and not actual sunrise and sunsets. Scripture itself sets this pattern for us. Morning and evening are used figuratively in Psalm 30:5, Psalm 49:14,15, Psalm 90:6. Thus, the evening and morning of creation can mean the start and end of the creative process that is attributed to that creation period.

Literal/Figurative Argument

This argument says that you cannot use a word figuratively until after you have used it literally. Is this rule valid? I see no reason to suppose that it is. You have to be careful with young earth claims about biblical interpretation methods. Again, they will invent rules that support their cause, when there is no basis for their rule in Hebrew.

In this case, it makes no difference which order the word Yom appears in, i. e. literal before figurative or vice versa. Yes, these are the first words of the Bible, but they are not the first words of mankind. All the time from Adam to Moses, men were speaking in their own languages, thus the literal interpretation via spoken language would already have been established. There was no need to suppose a literal/figurative structure.

If God's Creation Was Billions of Years Old...

If God's creation was billions of years old, how would He have written the creation account in Genesis? One thing is certain...God is good at telling us exactly what we need to know.

When God refers to a large number, He uses picture stories, such as Abraham's descendants being as numerous as the sand. Why does He do this? If God had said, "You will have millions of descendants," Abraham would have asked, "What is a million?"

When considering the creation, if we broke it down into days, that would be 5,000,500,000,000 days, or roughly 13.7 billion years. Do we need an account for each day of creation...of course not. God in His infinite wisdom, saw fit to tell us the creation story by breaking it down into creative segments, each of which was attributed to a specific creative act or acts. We need to give the early Hebrews of Genesis a break...they didn't have calculators like we do!

One must also consider that time with God has no meaning. To Him, 10 billion years is like a day. Thus, it is no problem for God to put billions of years into one of His days. Dr. Hugh Ross puts it best in his determination that the frame of reference for creation is the surface of the earth. Genesis 1:2 puts the witness of creation on the surface. But who is witnessing these events? It is God himself. During the first 5.99 days of creation, God is the only one present. Thus, human time does not matter...no humans were there to witness the passage of time. What matters is how God sees time! Thus, a billion year day is only a passing moment in God's eyes.

The creation account is written in such a manner for all people to understand it. The issue is not how long creation took...the issue is that God did it, and that's all that matters in the end.

Conclusion

With such a wide usage of the word Yom for many different time periods, it cannot be claimed that Yom in the Old Testament only represents a 24-hour period. During the creation account alone, Yom represents four different time periods. Rules of Hebrew, created by young earth Hebrew scholars, are invalid. Because of their biased position, they are trying to prove their own agenda.

Since humans did not witness creation, our own concept of a 24-hour day does not apply. The only thing that matters is God's concept of time. Thus, the only evidence we have to accurately assess the age of creation is the creation itself. Since the rocks and stars say we are billions of years old, that must be the truth. This fits perfectly with a literal interpretation of Genesis, and an inerrant Bible, and does not impact any other Biblical doctrines.

No matter how much you want something for someone else you cannot set goals for that person and rely on them being achieved. The power within goal setting lies in the fact that the individual decides and commits to the actions to be taken and the outcomes desired. Having said that, coaching young adults is different from coaching adults because very often the young person does not yet have the life skills to find the answer for themselves and therefore input and suggested courses of action may be required by the parent or the coach, however, it is still up to them to decide what they want.

I would advise any parent to encourage their children to discuss their fears and issues about revision and exams and the stress they might feel under and offer support, understanding and some practical suggestions like the ones listed below.

1. Make a study plan and share it with the family and get their support in making your plan succeed. It’s often said that people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.

2. Identify the best time of day for you to study, not too late and not too early. Let people know that this is your time for revision and ask them to respect this.

3. Use quick revision tools that work for you. Create lists of facts, flash cards, mind maps whatever will help you. Carry them with you and in quiet moments during the day take them out and do some speed revision for 5 – 10 minutes.

4. When revising for exams set a goal or outcome for every revision session don’t try to cover the whole subject in one go, chunk it down into manageable sections this avoids being overwhelmed by the task and boosts the sense of accomplishment by giving lots of small achievements. There’s an old question that goes “How do you eat an elephant?” to which the answer is “One mouthful at a time”. Exam stress is also a problem for some young people and they might want to practice some relaxation techniques to help with this, here are a few.

1. Remember to breathe. When we get nervous we tend to breathe rapidly in a shallow manner high up in our chest. Slow your breathing down and breathe deeply so that your stomach moves in and out.

2. Our emotional state is often linked to our posture so sit with your back straight and try not to slouch over your desk. This helps with breathing and more importantly promotes an alert state of mind.

3. Go on holiday for 30 seconds. Close your eyes and picture your favourite holiday destination. See how different the light is, feel the touch of the breeze on your skin and hear the sounds all around you.

Finally for both parents and young people, yes it’s important to get the results you want but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t. If you really want that result you can find many ways to achieve and even exceed it remember there is no failure only feedback, use what you learn to improve your chances next time.

Some things to consider before breeding your dog

Breeding dogs can be one of the most rewarding things you can do. Of course it's not as simple as deciding to breed and starting. There are some important things you need to ask, and honestly answer before you can breed with a clear conscience.

With so many unwanted puppies you need to be sure you can find good homes for all the puppies. There are far too many unwanted pets in the world. If you are wanting to breed because you feel you have a lot of time, resources and love to give - rather consider adopting one of the many millions of homeless pets and giving your love in this way.

You will need to have your bitch thoroughly checked by the veterinarian before thinking about allowing your bitch to become pregnant. Lingering and chronic medical conditions must be identified and sorted out before pregnancy. If something is found that would indicate that pregnancy is dangerous for your bitch (for example Daschunds have severe back problems which can be exacerbated by pregnancy) the problem needs to be sorted out.

While at the vet you will also need to ask many questions. Doing your homework helps here too - if you are going to do this there are a great deal of things you will need to know about. And many unforeseen circumstances you might find yourself in. You must know a great deal about all aspects of your bitches reproduction before you go ahead.

Caring for puppies also takes significant resources. You will need to commit to a great deal of extra time on your part. Caring for a pregnant, whelping and lactating bitch is time consuming enough, not to mention caring for the puppies.

Financially you will need to prepare for the added veterinarian costs, both for your bitch and the necessary vaccines for the puppies. If you cannot afford the medical costs then under no circumstances should you breed with your bitch.

A litter can be as large as 12 puppies which will place an enormous financial strain on you. Unless both dogs are of very good breeding you might not see any return on your investment.

Emotionally the process can also have its ups and downs for you and your family. Are you prepared for the possibility of sick, deformed or even dead puppies? How will your children react? How will you deal with these kinds of issues?

Examine your motives carefully. Don't breed because you think you will be able to make some profit for yourself. This is both false and selfish. Don’t' breed only because you think it will be a joyous experience for your children. If something goes wrong it won't be quite as joyful. Lastly if you are clinging to false fantasies about cute puppies and no other work then think again.

Remember - every puppy you create is your responsibility and that can be quite a monumental thing. This means if owners of the puppies cannot care for them anymore you will need to take them back.

It's hard, messy work and there is an endless list of things that can go wrong.

This said, allowing your bitch to mate can be a very rewarding experience. If you are sure you have considered all the aspects, are well read and sure you have enough love, time and money to go round - then enjoy the experience. It's amazing to watch the miracle of life unfold before you. If you have children it will be both educational and memorable experience.

Give an asset and take a loan

Credit cards have certainly become a necessity in this millennium. Walk into any store and you will find the sign, "We accept credit cards", hanging at the door. Moreover, people in general are increasingly going the credit card way when they have to pay a variety of bills. In the old days, if someone wanted to buy a product on credit, some sellers made it a point to ask for security. At the same time, the borrower also realizes that he needs to keep up with the payments if he does not want his property to be lost. One very familiar loan type offered by banks is what is called a savings secured loan. This is a loan whereby the borrower is required to have an existing savings account with the bank and a portion of the funds in the account is used as collateral. Since he has been with the bank for a while, the banker knows of his credit standing and knows that the loan is covered. Once the loan is repaid, the portion held as collateral is relieved and given back to the borrower.

Another form of secured loan is the mortgage loan wherein the borrower has to put up his house or any property against the money that has been lent to him. If the person concerned has a good financial standing and is sure of being able to repay the loan, then he should opt for the secured loan as this offers the least risk and it may charge a lower amount of interest. In case he is not able to repay the borrowed amount, the bank will do a foreclosure. What this means is that the bank will take possession of the property and dispose of it in any way that it desires in order to obtain the money due to them. However, if a loan was secured whereby the borrower bought a vehicle or property, the bank has the right to repossess the same in order to get back the loan amount.

These are just two of the various kinds of secured loans that are available in today's markets. The astute loan seeker would have to do some extensive looking around if he wishes to find loans that are among the cheapest in the market.

Identifying the snake, or at least the general species of it, can potentially save the victim's life. If the snake cannot be identified, then it is best to describe it in as much detail as possible once help arrives.
